Alcune cellule staminali del cancro al polmone sono state isolate e cresciute, in uno studio che potrebbe portare a nuove strade per trattamenti di immunoterapia rivolti a specifiche cellule staminali. La ricerca della University of Cincinnati e’ stata pubblicata sulla rivista PLOS One. “Studi crescenti supportano l’idea che i tumori abbiano una popolazione di cellule staminali che rigenerano continuamente il tumore e gli danno ‘benzina'”, ha spiegato John Morris, fra gli autori della ricerca.
Nel nuovo studio, gli scienziati hanno scoperto un modo per isolare cellule staminali del cancro al polmone che potrebbe essere usato in un modello animale murino con un sistema immunitario pienamente funzionante: il metodo, che ha mostrato come crescono queste cellule in coltura, potrebbe migliorare enormemente la comprensione di come nasce il cancro al polmone e individuare nuovi bersagli terapeutici per eradicare questa malattia. “L’immunoterapia e’ il futuro del trattamento del cancro. Speriamo che il nostro studio possa accelerare le indagini sulle immunoterapie specifiche per determinate cellule staminali cancerose”, ha concluso Morris.
