Alcune persone soffrono di eccessiva sonnolenza a causa di un composto che si trova naturalmente nel cervello e che agisce in modo simile a un sedativo come il Valium o lo Xanax. La ricerca della Emory University di Atlanta e’ stata pubblicata su Science Translational Medicine. Lo studio riguarda in particolare la cosiddetta ipersonnia, condizione caratterizzata da una persistente sonnolenza diurna della quale non si conosceva finora l’origine.
Molti farmaci usati per trattare l’insonnia agiscono sui recettori del Gaba, un neurotrasmettitore che smorza l’attivita’ neurale. Gli scienziati hanno esaminato il fluido cerebrospinale di 32 pazienti che soffrivano di ipersonnia, aggiungendo ad esso delle cellule geneticamente modificate per produrre recettori Gaba. I ricercatori hanno scoperto che il fluido di questi soggetti non attivava i recettori Gaba direttamente, ma i recettori introdotti risultavano piu’ sensibili di circa il doppio del normale al Gaba. L’effetto e’ simile a quello prodotto dalle benzodiazepine, gli ingredienti attivi in farmaci ansiolitici come il Valium. Questo effetto non si vedeva con fluido cerebrospinale di paziente che non soffrivano di questo disturbo del sonno
