Un composto chimico che induce le cellule spermatiche immature a uscire dai testicoli precocemente potrebbe aprire la strada a nuovi contraccettivi. Gli scienziati che da anni studiano una “pillola maschile” hanno recentemente scoperto diversi modi per ostacolare la produzione di sperma, di solito attraverso lo spegnimento dei geni e/o delle proteine tipiche dei testicoli. Ora un team guidato da C. Yan Cheng del Population Council’s Center for Biomedical Research di New York City ha individuato un nuovo modo per fermare la spermatogenesi: interferire con la barriera emato-testicolare, una sorta di ‘firewall’ cellulare tra i testicoli e la circolazione sanguigna.
Quando gli scienziati hanno iniettato un frammento di una speciale proteina nei testicoli di topo, la barriera si e’ infranta: in questo modo, lo sperma immaturo e’ fuoriuscito dai testicoli troppo presto, prima di essere in grado di fecondare l’ovulo. Un dato ancora piu’ importante e’ che questi cambiamenti sono stati reversibili. I risultati della ricerca sono pubblicati su ‘Nature Communications’. Un potenziale contraccettivo maschile richiedera’ comunque molti piu’ test: per esempio, non si e’ verificato se i topi che hanno subito questo trattamento, poi invertito, hanno avuto meno cuccioli del normale. Secondo Cheng, comunque, il vantaggio di questa proteina rispetto ad altri contraccettivi sarebbe che il corpo la produce naturalmente in piccole quantita’, e quindi e’ probabile che sia ben tollerata.
